Stan Twitter is a Twitter community primarily focused on celebrities, pop culture, and music. Many FlopTok compilations incorporate popular Stan Twitter memes. Stan Twitter icons are mainly female, with the exception of male K-Pop groups and artists like Troye Sivan, and Harry Styles.

Despite its similarities, FlopTok is generally disassociated from Stan Twitter, mainly because of Stan Twitter & Floptok's differences in daily vocabulary, and Stan Twitter's approach towards caustic humor.

Etymology[]

The word "Stan" is a portmanteau of the two words "stalker" and "fan". It was first used in 2000 with the release of the song "Stan" by Eminem, For his album "The Marshall Mathers LP". The word is used both as a noun and a verb, being added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2017. The term is mainly used to describe an individual with obsessive tendencies towards a celebrity or notable figure, especially a music artist.

Culture[]

Similarity with FlopTok[]

Stan Twitter and FlopTok both have funny, "copy-and-paste" style videos and funny captions that go along with said video, with the key differences being Stan Twitter's focus on pop culture and fandom wars, while Floptok is more general in content.

The community is FlopTok's direct predecessor, with many users from the community migrating to TikTok in the early 2020s, sharing memes used in FlopTok videos to this day. It is still very controversial to compare the two communities, as Stan Twitter is considered very aggressive and mordant, while Floptok is generally more playful in humor, and apathetic towards hate speech.

Similarity with Da Boyz[]

Stan Twitter (unfortunately) shares many similar qualities with Da Boyz, both having snarky humor and hateful tendencies. Most, if not all of Stan Twitter, are very discriminatory, and very ignorant towards the common usage of racial, homophobic and ableist slurs in their community.

Many members of the community have even driven celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande off of the platform as a result of the derisive behavior shown by some Stans. Stan Twitter may also incorporate significant tragedies into their humor, such as the OceanGate Wreckage, the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, and the events of 9/11.
